Happy late Bastille Day to everyone who celebrates! Yesterday was not only a big day for the people of France, but us who are studying abroad since we missed Fourth of July so at least we get to celebrate SOME country’s independence! From what I could tell by walking around and observing the population of Paris, people love their independence day way more than we do in America, but honestly I can’t blame them as one could argue that America stinks :). Seeing how different people interact with one another and the sense of nationalism throughout Paris showed how people viewed the Storming of Bastille and how big of a turning point in the French revolution it was, something that ended with a big spectacle of fireworks at the Eiffel Tower on Thursday night.

I swear it’s just the Eiffel Tower, nothing else

The Eiffel Tower, what was once the biggest structure in the world, is an integral part of the Paris skyline, being an impressive feat of engineering while also standing tall for the past 135 years. When visiting the Tower this past week, I personally opted to just stay on the second floor, it was good enough of a view anyways, but it also allowed for me to see some of the finer details that went into construction. Instead of taking the elevator down to the ground, Rachel and I chose to walk down the stairs and it really allowed for us to see how well the Tower was put together and how safe it is for pedestrians with having so many nets hanging up on the off chance you fall. One thing that stuck out to me during the tour was how Dr Smith said the lights on the Tower are completely unique, so obviously I had to see them in action! When seeing the Eiffel Tower light up by the lights, being backlit by the fireworks all throughout the sky, and having what felt like every person in Paris go “Ooooo Ahhhhh” for every flash of color really made me feel like a local celebrating Bastille Day. A fun experience I wouldn’t trade for the world.

  1. First off: HOW did you get such a cool view for the fireworks?! Second: I really love how you incorporated the fireworks into the Legos– the color and dimension of this one are especially impressive!
