Tiny Statue of Liberty

On one of my first days in Paris, I visited the garden of Luxembourg, which was massive and amazing. Like many parks there where statues all around, but what stuck out to me was that they where almost all of women, something rare in the US. Later I learned that this was in honor of Catherine de’Medici (more on her later), who designed the original park.

With all of these statues, this one still stood out. I knew that the French gave us the Statue of Liberty, so it makes sense that they would have a few copies of their own, but I was still surprised to see this little version here.

According to the US Consulate`s website (link below), this statue was commissioned by the same person who made the one in the US, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, for the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. The one in the park is a reproduction, with the original now in the Musée d`Orsay.

  1. Hi Jenna, you and I had VERY different reactions to the Statue of Liberty in Paris. While you were excited about the history of it, I was excited because it shows up in hit film National Treasure: The Book of Secrets! I almost immediately send a picture to my parents making a reference to the movie and they made one back, it was a fun time, lots of laughs!
