Let Them Eat Cake!

On Saturday we visited Versailles with MICEFA. There were lots of people there because it was a Saturday and it was a beautiful day. But luckily we didn’t have to stand in line because we had a group pass.
I have been to Versailles before and at the time it was the highlight of my trip. But this time when I visited it, I experienced sensory overload! There is gold all over the place (I wonder if it has anything to do with Louis XIV being the sun king) and there are ornate carvings all over the ceilings and walls. Because there was so much to look at, I couldn’t really take the time to appreciate the art that was there. I can understand why there was a French Revolution!
The other day while visiting the Luxembourg gardens, we talked about the fountains being a symbol of power because they are expensive to maintain and build, and it takes knowledge in science and technology to make them work. The fountains at Versailles were the most impressive part of the chateau. My friend Girard told me that Versailles would only have the fountains running while Louis XVI was at court because of the time and money it takes to make them work. I thought that this was an allusion of power since poor Louis would later be beheaded during the French Revolution!
My favorite part of my visit was seeing the Yorktown painting in the Hall of Victories. It made me proud to be from Yorktown!
