A Study Abroad’s Study Abroad

Does that look familiar?

Greetings from Denmark! As all of you know by now, or if you’ve seen my three instagram posts or airport reviews on my snapchat story, I am currently in Denmark, visiting Lego HQ for the long weekend! Who says you can’t fit a mini vacation within three days? Overall, I absolutely had a blast up here in Billund, this is the closest I’ll probably ever get to my dream job and being able to walk in the footsteps of so many great set designers has made me the happiest I’ve been in a while. That being said, I’m ready to return to reality tomorrow and continue exploring Paris.

It takes a real lego dweeb to be able to tell what piece this was mimicking

Before my meeting at 2 earlier today, I decided to do a quick swing through Legoland because it’s literally down the street from my hotel. I am personally glad I did because there was a huge section, probably half the entire park, dedicated to the builds of famous locations, as shown above with the Eiffel Tower build. Another thing that I enjoyed was also looking at this park from the same eyes I’ve been using to examine the streets and buildings of Paris. Walking around this area, for real lego dweebs like Dr Smith and I, it’s clear that every surface of this park was made to look like bricks, as shown by the random wall picture to the right. Once I saw this wall, I knew that it was supposed to be mimicking the back of a 1×2 blue-gray masonry brick, which I thought was cool because they’re really trying to made everything seem plastic! I know I sound like a broken record but it’s all about the details!

As I’m here for a different reason than most of you, one room in the Lego House that stuck out to me was the Green Room, which had you construct one portion a city and use that to work with other creations people make. I chose to make a small fountain on the green plate, which indicated to the interactive table that a park is supposed to be in this slot. We as a class have been walking around and observing a lot of spaces, mostly for public use, in Paris and I thought making a complex fountain would be a nice little homage towards what we’ve been studying. Plus, I put my fountain in an area where there were about three rows of buildings, the urban planner in me told me that they needed a common space for social gatherings and to make them less depressed!

Finally, since I’m flying back tomorrow I thought I would mention the fact that today I took a grand total of 224 pictures, it would’ve been more but I signed a strict NDA with lego once I entered their headquarters because I was able to see and hold some sets coming out in the next 2+ years (there’s some good ones). So if any of you want a presentation on what went down for me this weekend feel free to hit me up, god knows I have slides for a presentation! See you back in Paris!
